Kitchen Gadgets - Part 2 - Plastic Bag Sealer |
|||||
Well looking at my last blog entry I have been a bit lazy adding new items to this page so I figured it was about time to add something new.
This gadget looks sort of like a stapler and I guess that is more or less the function, to hold things together. In this case, however, the material held together is plastic, plastic bags to be more precise.
It doesn't work with every type of plastic bag and is designed to seal the ones that are a bit harder, not the soft floppy type of plastic. It is great for putting an air-tight seal back on a bag that you have just cut open.
It runs on a couple of AAA batteries and these seem to last for quite a few months before they need replacing.
There is a small non-stick heating element that is activated as you close the 'jaws' on the plastic bag. All you do is to slowly drag the gadget along a line where you want the bag to seal and it does the rest. You do have to learn to proper speed to drag it along because if you are too slow the plastic melts too much and if you are too fast it won't seal properly.
Like many items that I collect for the kitchen this one came from an op-shop and cost just $1. Really amazing what you can find if you look.

Kitchen Gadgets - Part 1 - Aerolatte Frother | |||||
There are all sorts of useful and interesting gadgets available for use in the kitchen. Some are cute and quite fun while others are just practical and useful. The first one is more fun than anything else.
It is a battery powered frother that is great for making drinks like ice coffee and for frothing milk. It is really simple to use and does a great job. I used to make iced coffee by stirring like mad to dissolve the sugar, now I just spend a few seconds with this gadget and the work is all done.

As I have spent many years in Malaysia I thought some pictures of the 'real thing' would give you an idea of the food available.
Fresh fruit and cooked food are found all over the place and are very cheap in Malaysia.
Dim sum is a favourite and a great way to pass a few hours sitting, talking and snacking
Steamed pows can be filled with sweet or savoury filling
Sometimes hygiene standards are not quite what some overseas visitors to Malaysia might expect.
Steam Boat - A very social way of eating.
Breakfast at the markets on a Sunday morning before doing the grocery shopping
Up in the mountains the weather is pleasantly cool and roadside stalls line the roads in many towns.
Small restaurants can be the best places to eat. This one in Sri Muda serves the best Char Siew Pork
