CHILD ABUSE -

The following paragraph is from the book, 'The Peel Estate 1919-1936' by Tresna Shorter. It deals with the extremely harsh lives that some children experienced.

'No thought was given to the moral and physical welfare of two girls, aged ten and thirteen years, who daily walked, bare footed through the bush, uphill along a sandy track to deliver two gallons of milk to men working in the quarry. When the girls father discovered that sexual activities were taking place with the men, he horse whipped the girls and locked them in their room for a week (to recover from their injuries) after which he placed them in St. Joseph's orphanage. The men went unpunnished.'

At some point the girls escaped from the orphanage and were forced into prostitution in order to survive. The older one went on to become a well-known madam in Perth and Kalgoorlie brothels.
