DESCRIPTION

Dodlakine is located on the Great Eastern Highway between the larger towns of Kellerberrin to the west and Merredin to the east.

European explorers visited the area in 1864 and the name comes from a nearby rock formation and is Aboriginal in origin.

The first townsite was located north of the current site but when the railway line came through 5km south, people quickly moved closer to the rail.

Doodlakine was the terminus of the railway for about a year from 1893 and people transferred from the train to horses and horse drawn wagons to continue their journey to the goldfields. As soon as the railway pushed further east, Doodlakine lost its importance.

The original townsite was gazetted in 1891 and the current site was gazetted in 1899.

Doodli (as the locals affectionately call the town) has hosted music festivals in the past but we can find no evidence of anything recent.

The area is primarily known for wheat and sheep farming but the town doesn't offer a great deal to the casual visitor.

You may find a report by the The West Australian Newspaper that Doodlakine was once proposed as Australia's capital city but I strongly suggest that if you find and read this article, that you pay close attention to the date it was published.
