Dog Cemetery
There are over 200 pets at rest here and you will find it west of the town just north of the main road.
The cemetery has its origins back in 1974 when Paddy Wright was looking for a place to lay his dog Strike to rest.
The shire suggested a site 5km west of the town and it wasn't long before other locals were also following Paddy's example and buried their dogs there too.
In the 1980s, Alan Henderson started adding headstones to the graves and in 1992 the dog statue that guards the entrance to the cemetery was added.
When we visited and walked around the cemetery we were overcome with emotion. Walking around and reading the names of much loved dogs, seeing some of their pictures and understanding the loss their owners felt. I could see that Dorothy had the sniffles and was trying to hide it from me as she thought I might think she was silly but then she saw the tears in my eyes and knew that I was feeling the same way.
Not that the dog cemetery was a sad place, it is a beautiful loving tribute to much loved family members but it certainly had an impact on both of us.
Anyone is welcome to bury their dog in the cemetery but it is necessary to contact the Shire office first on (08) 9063 2203.
