DESCRIPTION
Deanmill is located a few kilometres west of Manjimup and is an interesting example of an old style timber town.
Most of these small timber production settlements have long since disappeared but Deanmill appears to still be a thriving community and the
mill was still in operation the last time we visited.
The town dates from 1913 and the mill was involved in the production of railway sleepers for the Trans-Australia railway.
The town was named after Alfred Dean, the first long term manager of the mill.
A school opened in the town in 1914 and had a peak enrollment of around 90 students in the 1950s. This fell to about 12 just before the school was closed down.
The local town hall is a significant structure but it has been allowed to fall into disrepair and in all likelihood, will end up being demolished as it becomes
unsafe. This would be a great tragedy as the building was once the hub of the community and has considerable historic value.
There is a heritage trail leading from Manjimup to Deanmill that follows the route of an old rail line. This is also part of the Munda Biddi Trail.
It is moderately flat and well defined. It passes through bush and farm land. The first kilometre of the trail is sealed while the remainder is gravel.
It is best done in spring when the wildflowers are in bloom.
