CONDINGUP

DESCRIPTION

 

Condingup is a tiny town located about 70km north east of Esperance on the road to Cape Arid.

The local tavern has some basic shopping facilities and south of town is the very beautiful coastline at Orleans Bay.

There is a primary school, community centre, ambulance and fire truck.

The area offers some great 4 wheel driving, fishing and perhaps the most spectacular coastline in W.A.

 

HISTORY

 

The townsite was gazetted on 3 May 1963.

The name is thought to originate from the Aboriginal word Kunjinup, which refers to a local wildflower.

Local industry includes cattle, sheep and grain production.

The area seems to have been popular with various celebrities who perhaps saw it as a remote location to get away from everything. Names such as Art Linkletter, Anne Baxter and Rhonda Fleming are all linked to property in the area.
