The Great Tree Climb -


During the summer of 1948-49 a group of forestry students were visiting the south west on a field trip.

They decided to play a game while visiting the different fire lootout trees and it started at the Diamond Tree.

At the base of the tree they each downed a ‘king brown’ (700ml bottle of beer) and then climbed up to the cabin.

They moved on to Big Tree and did the same, then Pemberton tree Gloucester Tree, and finally, the Gardner Tree when darkness was already setting in.

The winner was the student who climbed all the trees in the fastest time.

Thankfully this little game was never repeated and even more thankfully, none of the students were killed or injured during the duration of their game.

The winner's name remains a mystery...
