The Folklore of Western Australia

THEY TOOK AWAY MY COUNTRY

They took away my country
piece by little piece
They thought I wouldn't notice
how freedom would decrease

They took away my country
they cut down all the trees
they locked up all the beauty
with sick depraved decrees

They threw out all the free things
that we all used to share
They knocked us down and sold us out
and drove us to despair

They took the rugged wilderness
and strip mined all the land
built factories on pristine coast
they did not understand

They saw the land as nothing more
than profit, loss and gain
They didn't know the land would die
it couldn't stand the strain

So when the rivers all dried up
and when the last tree fell
we saw they'd taken paradise
and turned it into hell.
